Title: 'Anatomy IV'
Size: (HxWxD) - 31x19x9cm
Year: 2009
The fluidity of the glass mirrors the fluctuating nature of the body. The state of the body is perpetually in flux, with fluids constantly being pumped around the body and cells dying and regenerating. My work reflects a need to understand the anatomical structure and space of the body. The fragmented, segmented body is significant in the field of anatomy and relevant to my work. The medical gaze maps the interior body, the once invisible and unchartered.
Throughout history we have collected and preserved items of interest so that we can learn and develop from them. The vessel is a visual signifier of the containment of knowledge displayed within our museums.

The lens magnifies the object in the way in which natural history opens up an understanding of the globe. I aim to provide a representation of our obsession with collecting, categorizing and preserving the world around us. This work is a dialogue about the ongoing acquisition, preservation and dissemination of knowledge.

By presenting an organ, a fragmentation of the body, the viewer is given a sculpture to examine and decode which gives them another perspective of their own bodies.
Enormous amounts of scientific research and funding have been contributed towards the preservation and maintenance of the human organism. We are at a time in which our society must dedicate as much energy, thought and resources into the greater organism, our planet. This is the heart of the matter.

The artist should have comprehensive knowledge of anatomy in order to depict the human form. A complete understanding of the anatomical body; the medical body, is as important to an artist as blueprints are to a builder.

Tegan has used a cylindrical form that creates lenses to magnify the objects inside, alluding to the manner in which anatomy reveals the internal body. The surgeon and the artist share an iconic status and privileged gaze which passes through surface structures. The viewer is encouraged to examine the body through a medical gaze that is calculating, inquisitive and penetrative.
